is
to share
the knowledge accumulated at Rambam Medical Center
and in Israel over the last 50 years
concerning the organization of a trauma system,
mass casualty situations and resuscitation.
Rambam Medical Center is the only Level One Trauma Center and tertiary
care hospital in the north of Israel, serving a population of 1.5 million
people. It draws experience from the decades that it was the main hospital
for treating soldiers and civilians injured in the Lebanon conflict. Its staff
members are integral to the policy-making of the State of Israel in
matters such as determining guidelines for
mass casualty situations.
Hospital systems everywhere are faced with the reality of and the responsibility
for dealing with mass casualties. In today's world, our natural and social
environments are becoming increasingly unstable; at the same time, the
destructive power of man-made systems and technologies is also increasing. It is
no longer a matter of 'if' disaster strikes, only a matter of 'when'. To that
end, all hospitals and allied systems must be prepared to play a constructive
role in the management of mass casualties in their region.
