Course objectives

  •   Comprehending the continuity of treatment of trauma patients in a trauma system

  •   Understanding the structures involved in the various phases of treatment

  •   Developing a model of a trauma system appropriate for the participant's country of origin

  •   Managing mass casualty situations

  •   Mass casualty preparedness, including organization and medical response

  •   Classification of mass casualty situations, including terrorist attacks

 

 

 

 

Duration of the course

The course  will take a period of 2 weeks,  6 days weekly.

  •  Visit to an Israel Defense Forces Medical Corps facility

Trauma system

1. Structure of a national trauma system
2. Structure of a local trauma system
3. Pre-hospital phase: treatment, triage, transport, communications, quality assurance
4. Treatment in the trauma center
a. Acute phase:
admitting area, operating room
b. Sub-acute phase: intensive care units: general, neurosurgery, pediatrics
c. Long-term phase:
surgical departments: general, maxillofacial,
orthopedics, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, etc.
5. Steps in developing a specific national trauma system
6. Inter-connections in a trauma system:
pre-hospital-hospital; intra-hospital, inter-hospital
7. Guidelines and protocols:
initial assessment and treatment of a single patient
8. Quality assurance
9. Prevention
10. The place of the Medical Corps of the Israel Defence Forces in the trauma system in Israel

Mass Casualty Situations

1. Mass Casualty Situations — Definition and General Guidelines
2. Organization and management of mass casualty incidents at the scene and at the hospital
3. Medical management and treatment of mass casualty patients, special injuries, etc.
4. Non-conventional terrorism: biological, chemical and toxicological MCS
5. Training of personnel for MCS
6. The `ideology' of terror activity
7. Historical development of national and international terror events
8. Integration of police, military and other organizations in the management of a Mass Casualty Situation
